Kylian Mbappé delivered a decisive El Clásico performance as Real Madrid beat Barcelona 2-1 at Spotify Camp Nou, ending the hosts’ perfect start to the LaLiga season and dragging themselves firmly back into the title race.
Barcelona controlled possession and produced more shots, but Real Madrid were far more clinical with the chances that mattered. Mbappé opened the scoring shortly before half-time, Raphinha equalised after the break, and the French captain struck again in the 87th minute after Eduardo Camavinga launched a devastating counterattack.
Match Summary
Barcelona started with the greater share of possession and tried to stretch Madrid through Lamine Yamal, Anthony Gordon and João Cancelo. Gordon forced Andriy Lunin into several early saves, while Yamal also found promising positions without converting them.
Madrid remained dangerous whenever Barcelona’s high defensive line was exposed. The breakthrough arrived in the 41st minute when Kylian Mbappé reacted inside the penalty area and finished low past the goalkeeper after Barcelona failed to properly clear the danger.
Hansi Flick’s side responded after half-time. In the 61st minute, Pedri found Raphinha in the box and the Brazilian produced a composed left-footed finish to make it 1-1.
For a period, Barcelona appeared the more likely side to find the winner, but Madrid continued to carry a major threat in transition. That threat finally decided the game three minutes from the end.
Camavinga burst into the space behind Barcelona’s defence and played the ball across goal for Mbappé, who finished into an exposed net to complete his brace and silence Camp Nou.
Barcelona pushed forward again in the closing minutes but could not find a second equaliser, handing José Mourinho’s side a huge away victory.
Key Stats
Barcelona finished with 62% possession compared with Real Madrid’s 38% and outshot the visitors 18-10. Barça also registered six shots on target to Madrid’s five.
The underlying numbers, however, tell a different story. Madrid generated approximately 1.95 expected goals compared with Barcelona’s 1.19 and created four big chances to Barça’s two.
That difference in chance quality was decisive. Barcelona reached the final third more frequently and recorded 36 touches inside the Madrid penalty area, but too many of their shots came from less dangerous positions.
Madrid, meanwhile, repeatedly found high-value opportunities when Barcelona lost possession with players committed forward. Mbappé’s winning goal alone carried an xG of around 0.96.
Andriy Lunin was another major reason Madrid left with three points. Starting because Thibaut Courtois was ruled out with flu, the Ukrainian goalkeeper made five saves, including several important first-half stops from Gordon.
At the other end, Madrid’s defence absorbed heavy pressure. Dean Huijsen produced 10 clearances and four blocks, while the visitors finished with 30 clearances as a team.
There were no penalties or major VAR controversies that ultimately decided the contest. Aurélien Tchouaméni was booked early in the second half, while the match became increasingly physical in the closing stages.
Barcelona also suffered an early injury problem when Xavi Espart was forced off after 30 minutes and replaced by Alejandro Balde.
Star Player
Kylian Mbappé was the clear match-winner.
The France international scored both Madrid goals from only three attempts and earned an 8.2 Sofascore rating, the highest of any player on the pitch.
His first goal rewarded Madrid’s patience, while his second perfectly demonstrated why Barcelona’s aggressive defensive line remains such a dangerous gamble against elite pace.
Mbappé also created two chances, won five duels and drew four fouls. More importantly, he delivered when Madrid needed him most.
Raphinha was Barcelona’s biggest attacking threat, scoring the equaliser and attempting six shots. Pedri supplied the assist and created four chances, while Gordon also produced three shots on target and four key passes.
What This Result Means
The result blows the LaLiga title race wide open.
Barcelona remain top with 27 points from 10 matches, but their first league defeat of the season allows the chasing pack to close the gap. Atlético Madrid sit just one point behind, while Real Madrid move onto 24 points, only three behind Barça.
For Madrid, this was more than simply an El Clásico victory. Mourinho’s side arrived at Camp Nou needing a result to prevent Barcelona from building a potentially damaging early-season advantage, and they delivered exactly that.
For Barcelona, the defeat exposed a familiar weakness. They can dominate possession and territory, but their high defensive line leaves enormous space when the first press is broken.
From a betting perspective, Barcelona winning the possession and shot count while still losing is a useful reminder that volume does not always equal chance quality. Madrid’s transition threat produced fewer opportunities, but significantly better ones.
Final score: Barcelona 1-2 Real Madrid. Mbappé’s brace ends Barça’s perfect LaLiga start and puts Madrid right back into the title race.
